Purpose: To evaluate clinically acceptable long term storage compression rate of JPEG2000 of brainMR images.
Materials and Methods: 6 sequence images (ADC, DWI, FLAIR, T1, T1e, T2) from 7 cases wereselected, which had fine pathologic condition. All images were compressed with rate of 1:5, 1:10,1:20, 1:40 by JPEG2000 compression protocol. All of the paired images were scoring by a Neurologicradiologist.
Results: In groups of 1:5, all images had score 4 and over in two trials. In group of 1:10, 90.5% of imagesare over score 4. However in group of 1:20, and 1:40, the images had 27.4, 3.6.
Conclusion: 1:5 lossy compression images of JPEG 2000 are acceptable in diagnosis, however1:10 may be acceptable for long term storage of PACS.
